Shade perennials are plants that can grow and thrive in just a few hours of direct sunlight or no direct sunlight daily. These include ferns and hostas, plants primarily grown for their foliage, as well as flowering plants such as bleeding hearts, lily of the valley and primrose. With some planning and the right shade plants, you can create woodland and shade gardens with plenty of color, texture and interest. When selecting perennials for shade gardens, some factors to consider are their grow zone, soil requirements, light requirements, mature height and spread, bloom and foliage colors and bloom time (if applicable). For many gardens, deer resistance is also a factor to consider.
